Modhagam

Yesterday was Ganesha Chaturthi and I thought of making Modhagam as offerings to lord Ganesha. When I think of modhagam my mind takes me to Pillayarpatti, a small village near Karaikudi. The Karpaga Vinayagar temple in Pillayarpatti is very famous and a must see attraction when you visit Chettinad .

In Pillayarpatti modhagam is the prime offering to lord Ganesha. Modhagam is a sweet dish made with rice and dal mixture.

Preparation time:10 min
Cooking time:15 min
Serves:4-5

Ingrediants:
  • 1.25 cup of Palm Jaggery. I add a little extra for color and sweetness.
To Roast and grind:
  • 1 cup Raw Rice
  • 1/4 cup Split Green Gram Dal
Method:
  • Wash Rice and Dal .
  • Spread it in a dry cloth to remove excess moisture.

  • Grind Rice and dal in the mixer to a very coarse consistency without water.

  • Roast this until the raw rice and dal smell dissipates. Usually this takes 2 mins.
  • Boil 2 1/2 cups of water in sauce pan and add the Roasted mixture.
  • Cook till the water gets absorbed and the mixture is almost half cooked.

  • In a saute pan melt the plam jaggery to a paste like consistency in low heat.
  • Filter the jaggery paste.
  • Add filtered Palm jaggery to the half cooked rice mixture and mix well .

  • Make modhagam from the rice and jaggery mixture by shaping it into medium sized balls.
  • Steam the Modhagam for 5 min until the mixture is cooked through.

  • Modhagam is ready to be offered.
  • We celebrated Ganesha Chaturthi with Modhagam and Sundal.

Note:
  • Make sure remove the impurties in jaggery .
