Avarekalu Usli | Mochai Sundal | Karnataka Special

Avarekalu sundal - sundal prepared with dried mochai beans. Avarekalu  also called mochai in tamil ,surati papdi in gujarathi.papti /vaal in maharatshtra. We don't get fresh beans here in US,I buy dried beans and keep it.I love mocha kulambu and masala very much. When ever i remember , i will soak and prepare something interesting. Will soon bring more dishes using hyacinth beans in mykitchenodyssey.

One day when i ate kidney bean sundal in friends house i loved it so much.I don't know why ,it was very different and very tasty.I tried to replicate it using mochai payaru. This was prasad for lord ganesh on vinayagar chathurthi. It was indeed very tasty and very different.I love masala sundal and pattani sundal for prasad ,each of them prepared with own masala. If you like easy sundal or don't have time then go for pasipayaru or kadala paruppu.

I never prepared sundal with onions but this usli is prepared with onion .One of the specialities of karnataka. Two of my kannadiga friends always prepare this usli ,i got the recipe from them.I tried to reciprocate the usli recipe using avarekalu a karnataka special bean that  comes on the market around january month.
This usli can be eaten as a snack or can be had with chapathi if you prepare with little spice. You can also do with other beans like kidney beans, peas etc.
