Papaya Curry|Papali Kootu

Papaya  Curry a semi liquid gravy that goes very well with rice,roti dishes.

Other Names of Papaya:
     Raw papaya  also called as papali,green papaya, karamusa, kaplanga,Papaw,Paw paw,peper in other languages.Raw Papaya plays a major role in bengali ,Thai and Indonesia cuisine..That's why people's have a great glowing skin :)

Health benefits of raw papaya:
   It has highest vitamin A,vitamin C and has more of papaya enzymes than regular papaya.Raw papaya makes your skin feel bright and  fresh.Its improves metabolism as well.Its good for diabetics.

Warning:
     Unripe papaya has latex causes uterine contractions which may lead to miscarriage.Ripe papaya fruit in moderation can be eaten during first triemster.

What you can cook with Raw papaya:
       You can make tutti fruity i recently did,Make Curry like this . raw papaya salad,dry curry etc
Story behind the scene:
       After i did tutti fruity i got half of raw papaya remaining ,i was confused of what to do with it.because i never cooked raw papaya.We as kids only eat papaya fruit.Its looked similar to chayote so i thought why not make kootu with it.Then i did.Even my hubby couldn't make it what the curry is made of.It was exactly the same as chayote kootu curry..Looking at the health benefits, now i am going to cook this Raw papaya curry regularly.

 Cuisine: Indian Category:Sides Yields:2 cups Prep time:10 minutes Cook time:20 minutes Total time:30 minutes


Ingredients for papaya curry:
  • 2 cups chopped raw papaya
  • 2 green chili
  • 2 tbsp chana dal
  • 3 tbsp moongdal/pasiparupu
  • 1 small onion.
  • turmeric
  • hing
Ingredients to temper the curry:
  • 1 tsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp urad dal
  • few curry leaves.
How to cook papaya curry:
  • Cut the raw papaya in to small pieces.
  • Add chana dal,moong dal ,turmeric,hing to water .Dal's get soaked in water for 5 minutes.
  • Add chopped raw papaya,chopped onion,green chili.
  • Add more water if required and pressure cook it for 2 whistles.
  • Add oil to tava.now add mustard seeds.
  • Let the mustard seeds splutter.
  • Add urad dal,curry leaves to the tempering.
  • Add pressure cooked papaya along with required salt.
  • Let it boil for 5 minutes.
  • Papaya curry is ready to be served with rasam rice,sambar rice,Indian flat breads.
