Vazhakkai Kola Urundai- a crunchy snack/side made with raw banana.Kola urundai is nothing but South Indian kofta's.Kola urundai usually is made with minced meat in chettinad. For vegetarians valaipoo ,beetroot version of kofta's are also available. In vegetarian version toor dal add the required protein.
This version of raw banana kofta doesn't have any protein,if you wish/want some protein add some roasted gram while grinding.Sometimes kofta will spread out/spill in oil ,so i make beetroot kola /valaipoo kola instead of deep frying.
Last week i got 3 raw banana's to try kofta(i already decided while buying).Have a vague idea of how to do it ,but then called mom to confirm everything(she gave me some new ideas). She asked me to mash raw banana ,but i grated it(don't know why). Finally, when i ate the first one i was literally dancing,i made it ..made it.We ate the leftover's as a snack at the evening (but it was soft that time). When there is no soya granules, beetroot or vazhaipoo to make kola urundai at the time when your guest are arriving ,make this .Your guest will sure ask for the recipe.More over ,it is very easy. It can be made while you prepare other items.
If you got bored of regular vazhakkai fry, valakkai fry with fresh masala paste, boiling the raw banana and making raw banana fry with it you can sure give this recipe a try.Don't forget to write back to me if you try.I will be very happy.

Step by step picture recipe for making vazhakkai kola urundai/raw banana kofta:
- Cook raw banana in boiling water .When the banana changes color or when you can peel the skin off the banana, its ready .Switch off the stove.Cool it.
- Peel the skin off the banana and grate it.
- Grind the ingredients to grind to powder.
- Add the powder, salt, turmeric(forgot to add it before taking picture) , chili powder, rice flour to vazhakkai.
- Mix it very well.If you are not able to make balls, add more rice flour.Press hard to make balls.
- I got around 15 balls. When the oil is hot, deep fry the balls.Tip:Drop one ball at a time to allow the oil temperature raise. This prevents grated raw banana from spilling all over the oil.
- After the balls got browned, filter the excess oil using paper towel.
- Vazhakkai kola urundai is ready.Serve it hot as a snack or side for sambar or thayir sadam.
