Kollu Rasam/Horsegram Soup/Diet Recipe

                Kollu is one among the grains which is very healthy and good for people with overweight.There is a saying in Tamil "koluthavanuku kollu " that means If you are fat then horse gram is for you.So this rasam helps you in losing weight /cholesterol.
                I recently visited India and got a whole kg of horse gram.So I thought of making our favorite rasam.I thought of adding this healthy horse gram to our favorite rasam.I boiled horse gram and filtered the water then followed the same procedure for making.I used the cooked kollu for making chutney.The rasam tasted awesome.You can make rasam in so many varieties.Mentioned are the methods.

Variations:
  • Add boiled Dal(paruppu) to make it Dal rasam
  • Add boiled tomato to make it tomato horse gram rasam
  • Add Rasam powder to make it instant horse gram rasam
  • Even you can powder the horse gram and add it along with black pepper and cumin.

Preparation Time:20 min(pressure cooking)
Cooking time:15-20 min
Serves:2-3



Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup horse gram
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1 tsp pepper and cumin powder(adjust spice level)
  • 1 red chili
  • 1 plum tomato(or use 1 small country tomato)
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp lemon juice (skip if using country tomato)
  • salt as per taste

To temper:
  • 1 tsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2  tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 red chili
  • few curry leaves

To garnish:
  • few coriander leaves.

Method:
  • Add horse gram, tomato and garlic to pressure cooker and add enough water to it.

  • Pressure cook it for 2 whistles or until it is soft.

  • Filter  the pressure cooked water.

  • Add 1 to 1 1/2 cups of water additionally.
  • Add turmeric powder, red chili,pepper-cumin powder.
  •  Add fresh coriander leaves to it.

  • Heat oil in a pan.
  • First add mustard seeds and wait for it to splutter.
  • Then add cumin seeds and add curry leaves to it.
  • Add this tempering to rasam.
  • Cover it with lid and wait for 15 minutes or until it boils(not really boiling ,the liquid should not boil in the middle ,refer pic below  ).

  • Add lemon juice and salt to serving bowl .After the rasam boils add it to serving bowl .

  • Cover it with lid until ready to serve.

Note:
  • Pressure cook the tomato by doing this way rasam tastes awesome.
  • Cook in low fire so that rasam gets it flavor .Don't forget to cover it after boiling too .
  • You can skip off adding garlic to it.But I prefer adding it.
  •  Instead of adding lemon juice you can add tamarind paste (if you add country tomatoes check the tanginess before adding tamarind paste)
  • You can add rasam powder instead of pepper and cumin powder (because rasam powder has got all the powders in it ).If you are adding rasam powder adjust the spice level accordingly.
  • If you are adding Cooked mashed dal   .Add little more pepper-cumin powder ,salt and spice .
