Chana Pulao|Lunch Recipe

Chana Pulao/Channa pulao is a quick lunch made with chana/kabuli chana/white chickpeas/garbanzo beans.Chana pulao is a best variation from regular lunch/lunch box menu.Even pulao are good for lazy Sunday afternoon lunch right?You can eat with papad,vathal,raita of your choice.

    Everybody love chole because it is so soft and so tasty.Even my little one love it.In a week i do easy variety rice for lunch.During our childhood days moms make lime rice,tamarind rice,coconut rice,curd rice for our lunch box right ?I sometimes change the menu with tomato pulao,peas pulao,Mint pulao,Vegetable pulao,black chickpeas rice.Even i tried some mushroom fried rice,mushroom biriyani,Biriyani,Bisibelabath too.Over all new rice is always welcome in any Indian household.
Variation:
    You can  try this same chana pulao with 2-3 green chilies instead of chili and coriander powder.Masala and coconut is just enough for the pulao.
   Easy tip when you forget to soak the chana overnight.Soak the chana in hot water for about an hour then pressure cook it for 3 whistles.If you like to taste the chana in the pulao you can add them directly but remember it has to be soaked for at least 10 hours.You can substitute basmati rice for sona masoori to make the pulao.

Ingredients :
  •  1 1/4 cup rice(basmati or sona masoori).
  • 3/4 cup chana/vella kondakadalai(pressure cooked).
  • 1 onion/vengayam(chopped fine).
  • 1 tsp chili powder(can use 2 -3 green chilies instead).
  • 1 tsp coriander powder/Malli thool.
  • 1 pinch turmeric/manjal thool.
  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste.
  • 1 tbsp oil.
  • salt required.
 Items to grind:
  • 2 tbsp coconut/thengai.
  • 1 tbsp fennel seeds/sombu.
  • 1 tsp jeera/cumin seeds/jeeragam.
Preparation for the pulao:
  • Soak chana overnight or for 8 hours.
  • Pressure cook it for 2-3 whistles(not too soft).

  • Soak sona masoori rice/basmati rice for 15 minutes.
  • Drain the excess water and keep it aside.
  • Chop onion fine and slit the green chilies.
  • Grind the items to grind to fine paste and keep it ready.

How to make chana pulao:
  • In a large enough pressure cooker add 1 tbsp oil.
  • Add onions and green chilies and saute it until onions turn translucent.

  • Add rice and keep it for 1 minute.

  • Add cooked chana/chickpeas and ground paste.

  • Add enough water .Let it come to boil.
  • Check salt and spice now.You can add one drop of oil now to avoid the rice becomes too soft.
  • Pressure cook it for a whistle.
  • Chana pulao is ready.
  • Fluff  it and serve with plain raita or papad.
