Sakkarai pongal|sweet pongal is a rice made with jaggery.Its special in south india ,every household has tradition of making sakkarai pongal for special occasions.Specially sakkarai pongal takes the major place in pongal festival(a harvest festival) which occurs in tamil month thai, falls around January15 th every year.
Brahmins do this sweet pongal with more ghee and milk its called akkara vadisal.I am hardcore fan of it,really makes any one mouth waters.hmmmmm
Like any other recipe this sakkarai pongal also has many variations.My mom makes this style of pongal ,my mother -in law add some moong dal to the sweet pongal.If you are adding moong dal to the sakkarai pongal it has to pressure cooked along with rice.For 1 cup rice you can add 1/2 cup moong dal.

- Add moong dal/pasipayaru to add some protein.
- You can add coconut flakes instead of grated coconut .
- Increase the jaggery to make sakkarai pongal more sweeter.
- Add more ghee and to make it more rich.
- Add milk to make it more creamier.
- Obviously you can substitute rice with any millets.

Ingredients:
- 2 cups raw rice/Pacha arisi.
- 6 cups water for cooking rice
- 4 jaggery (achu vellam)
- 1 cup water for jaggery(add more if you need more creamier rice)
- 1 tbsp ghee(increase if necessary).
- 20 badam chopped/badam paruppu.
- 1 tbsp dried grapes/kis mis.
- 1 tbsp grated coconut(optional)/Thuruviya thengai.
- Pressure cook raw rice with 6 -7 cups of water for 3-4 whistles or until mushy.You can mash them as well if its not too mushy.
- Add water to jaggery .Let the jaggery melt (it will take 5 to 10 minutes for all of them to melt).
- Filter the jaggery with a mesh strainer.
- Add jaggery syrup to mashed rice and mix it completely.
- Add ghee to tava and temper it with badam and dried grapes.
- Add this to Sakkarai pongal.
- If adding grated coconut add it as is now.Otherwise roast the coconut pieces along with cashew,grapes and add to the rice.
- Mix all of them well together.
- Serve it as a prasad/neivedhyam.
- You can add chopped cashews instead of badam.I don't have any so added badam instead.
- Add more ghee to make this rice very rich.
- Add milk to make the rice more creamier and more rich.
