Paruppu podi- a traditional south Indian lentils powder/mix ,served along with ghee or gingelly oil.I personally love it with ghee more than gingelly oil.My mom makes idli podi quite often but not paruppu podi.So i got this recipe from my mother in law.She got to know many Brahmin's style recipe from her neighbours.
Some people mix other paruppu/lentils too to make paruppu podi, but we call it as idli podi rather than paruppu podi.If you want mix of lentils then better check my idli podi post.I like paruppu podi as a fine powder. You can make it coarse too.
If you are making home made powders then check garam masala powder , useful for any north indian curries.

Paruppu Podi Recipe | Lentils Powder
How to make Paruppu podiCuisine: South Indian Category:Accompaniment Serves:3/4 cup Prep time: Cook time:5 minutes Total time:15 minutes
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup toor dal/tuvaram paruppu.
- 2 red chilies(adjust spice level).
- 1/2 tsp pepper/milagu.
- 1/2 tsp jeera/cumin.
- little hing.
- Dry roast toor dal in tava for 3 minutes or until you get a nice aroma of toor dal.Paruppu/dal will shrink when you dry roast them.Keep it aside.
- Roast black pepper and jeera in high flame and a hot tava. After sometime spices will pop.Keep it aside.
- Add 1 drop of oil, add hing then add red chilies and roast it for 2-3 seconds.
- Roasting is to ensure that there is no water left to make the shelf life longer.
- Cool everything and grind to fine powder.(you can make it coarse too).
- Add required salt to the paruppu podi and give a quick pulse.
- Paruppu podi is ready. You can take it plain rice along with ghee or gingelly oil.
Note:
- I added around 1 tsp salt for this amount of podi.To make the podi with less salt reduce the spice level.
- This can be given to toddlers who are already walking. If they don't like sambar, rasam this can serve the required amout of protein for their diet.
