Flax Seed Podi Recipe | Alli Virai Powder | Podi Recipes

Flax Seed  podi a nutty ,spicy south Indian style coarse powder made with alsi seeds and spices.This is an entirely different and more aromatic podi than other.Prepared with simplest ingredients.For variations you can add urad dal and/or chana dal as well.

       This super nutritious seed is called as 'alsi' in Hindi.'alli virai' in Tamil,'agase' in Kannada,'Bittu' in Telugu,'Alasi' in marwadi,Gujarati,Sanskrit.If you love podi or trying variations of your regular powder this will help for sure. Yes !! ladies , for those lazy days, this recipe will come handy.You can have this powder with steaming hot rice and ghee/oil or with idli ,dosa or just sprinkle on upma or kootu.
      Flax seed is an edible seed known for years(but latest it has become more popular) which has high omega 3 fatty acids and  magnesium.There are so many easy ways to include in your diet.Eating freshly ground powder is considered to be the best.You can even include its oil to the smoothies or dosa to get the benefits.Its a best egg replace, add its powder to water and add  to your egg less bakes(Baking at 300 degrees is safe). Uses:

  Do you use linen clothing ? this is the seed of the same crop linseed.Linseed oil is made from these crop too.This oil is a nutritional supplement and is used in wood finishes.There are two types of linseed one is brown and other is yellowish.Both has same nutritional benefits except yellow one has little less omega 3 fatty acids.

Step by step picture recipe for making spicy flax seed podi/powder:

  • Dry roast flax seed until it pops.Transfer it to another container to cool.Dry roast curry leaves  and then add red chili while the curry leaves is in half way roasting.Fry them until crispy.Roast cumin seeds until it pops up and add to the mix.

  •  Roast  dry coconut separate and cool it.If adding garlic then dry roast it too.Cool and grind along with tamarind and salt to coarse powder.

  • Store in refrigerator and add to everything you like.

Ingredients :( I used US cup)

  • 1/4 cup flax seed/alsi/alli virai.
  • 2 red chili/kancha milagai.
  • 1 little piece of tamarind/puli.
  • 1 clove garlic/poondu.
  • 1 tbsp dry coconut/koparai.
  • 5-10 curry leaves/kariveppilai.
  • 1/4 tsp jeera/jeeragam.
  • required salt
Method:
  • Dry roast flax seed until it pops.Transfer it to another container to cool.
  • Dry roast curry leaves  and then add red chili while curry leaves is in half way roasting.Fry both until crispy.
  • Roast  dry coconut and cool it.
  • Roast cumin seeds and add to the already roasted mix.
  • If adding garlic dry roast for sometime.
  • Cool and grind all of them along with tamarind and salt to coarse powder.
  • Your delicious Flax seed podi is ready.Store in refrigerator and add it to everything like stuffing,Have it with idli,dosa or add little podi with yogurt then have with chapathi .
Note:
  • Fresh flax seed can be used long where as the ground ones can go rancid(loose nutritional value) after few days at room temperature.
  • So store in an airtight container and store in refrigerator.It can be free flowing even stored at freezer(haven't done that).
  • Make sure to drink plenty of water when you take these.
  • If you want to take full benefit, then freshly ground and include in yogurt,smoothies,rice,sides.
