Toor Dal-Paruppu Chutney Chettinad Style

Toor Dal Chutney is a quick and easy side dish. I always remember my mom when I make this dish. This is one of my dad's favorite side dishes and my mom makes this often. This gravy has an unique flavor and you can have this with any South Indian breakfast items like Idly, Dosa or Upma. Here is the recipe.


Preparation time:5 min
Cooking time:10-15 min
Serves:3-4

Ingredients:

  • 1 small Onion.
  • Oil or tempering.
  • Salt as required.
  • A pinch of turmeric.
  • 1/2 tbsp tamarind paste.
To Grind:
  • 3-4 tbsp Toor dal (soak for 15-20 min) .
  • 2 Red Chilies.
  • 1 tbsp Fennel seeds.
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds.
To Temper:
  • 1/2 tbsp Mustard seeds.
  • 1/2 tsp Fennel Seeds.
  • 1/2 tsp Urad dal.

Method:

  • Soak the Toor dal for 20 min and grind it with the items in "To Grind".


  • Finely chop the onions.
  • Add oil to a hot sauce pan.
  • Add Mustard seeds and allow it to sputter.
  • Add Urad dal (let it change color) and Fennel Seeds.
  • Add Onions and cook them until they are translucent.
  • Add the ground paste and add tamarind and turmeric.
  • Add the required salt and let it come to a boil and cook till the raw smell dissipates.
  • Toor dal chutney i ready to be served.





Note:

  • If the chutney is hot add little more tamarind.
  • Adjust the salt to your taste.
  • Make sure that the chutney boils well so that you don't get the smell of dal.
  • Chutney will get thicker and thicker so add water accordingly.
