Vegetarian Black Bean Soup|Spicy Bean Soup

        Black Bean Soup-One of the classical dishes of Cuba,Mexico is black bean soup.This is a Spicy vegetarian version(no meat) of black bean soup with chili and coriander powder.We usually have this soup for dinner at least once a week.Soak the beans for minimum 8 hours if using dried ones.If in case you forgot ,soak the black beans in hot water for 4 hours at least.
    Lentils are the staple protein diet for any vegetarian.Being a vegetarian i love all the beans and lentils.This black  bean soup has been my favourite for almost 3 years now.

 Health benefits of  Black turtle bean :
      Black bean is iron rich and is rich in potassium,magnesium,calcium and vitamin B6.Also rich in folate and has high dietary fibre.

Variations you can make with this soup:
  1.  You can add grated cheese or cheese slices to make a creamy soup.
  2.  You can use canned beans , filter the water and wash the beans again in fresh water.
  3.  You can use fresh sliced mushrooms.This step is completely optional.
  4. You can use hot sauce along with chili and coriander powder.

 Cuisine: Cuba|Mexico Category:Dinner|lunch Yields:2 cups Prep time:8 hours+15 minutes Cook time:15 minutes Total time: hours 30 minutes



  • 1 1/2 cup black beans (soaked and pressure cooked).
  • 1/2 pound of Mushrooms. 
  • 1 large Onion.
  • 1 green chili(finely chopped).
  • 2 garlic pods.
  • Dash of Hot sauce for more spice(Optional)
  • 2 cheese slices(Optional)
  • 1/2 tsp Chili powder.
  • 1/4 tsp coriander powder.
  • Dash of dried oregano(optional)
  • Salt as required.
  • Chopped Fresh Cilantro/coriander leaves for garnishing.

Preparation to do for bean soup:

  • Soak the black beans for 8 hrs . 
  • Pressure cook them until they turn soft. It takes 4-5 whistles to cook.
  • Mash them thoroughly.
  • Finely chop the Onions and Garlic.
  • Slice the mushrooms into medium sized slices.
Cooking the black bean soup:
  • Heat a sauce pan ,add oil.
  • Add garlic and saute for a minute.
  • Add onions,green chili and saute until onions turn translucent.
  • Add mushrooms and saute them until they start to release their juices it takes 2-3 Min's.
  • Add salt ,chili powder,coriander powder,hot sauce and saute till raw smell of the masala dissipates.
  • Now add the cooked and mashed black beans.
  • Add water and let it come to a boil in low heat.
  • When it starts boiling add the cheese slices.
  • Adding the cheese makes the soup extra creamy.
  • Finally add dried oregano and garnish it with cilantro .
  • Serve spicy veg black bean soup with tortillas chips.

  • Cook and mash the black bean well .While mashing drain the excess water and mash.This really makes the beans creamy.You can add the filtered water while the beans is cooking.
  • You can add some more veggies to make it more nutritious .In that case you feel like Indian soup.
